Top 5 Gangster Books That Weren’t Fiction
When most people think of gangster books, they imagine movie scripts, mafia fan fiction, or half-truths dressed up to sell stories. But there’s a different kind of book — the kind written by men who actually lived it.
No glorified tales. No wannabe crime thrillers. Just pure outlaw code spilled on paper.
Here are 5 gangster books that weren’t fiction — and never will be.
1. The Gangster’s Handbook — by AnonymousX
106 pages of raw outlaw doctrine.
Written by a man who ran organized crime, survived prison, and decoded the entire system.
This isn’t a story — it’s a manual. A survival playbook for the street, the cellblock, or the boardroom.
Banned in jails. Hunted by the system. Still standing.

2. Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member — by Sanyika Shakur (aka Kody Scott)
A real-life account from a Crip shot-caller turned revolutionary.
Brutal, honest, and deeply psychological.
It reads like war — because it was.
3. The Ice Man — by Philip Carlo
A bone-chilling dive into the mind of Richard Kuklinski, mafia contract killer.
Based on hours of interviews.
Part biography, part confessional. Real deaths. Real contracts. Real consequences.
4. Pimp: The Story of My Life — by Iceberg Slim
Written by the man who defined street hustle for an entire generation.
Not a gangster in the classic sense — but a code-bearer all the same.
This book is scripture on psychological warfare, control, and manipulation.
5. Wiseguy — by Nicholas Pileggi
The basis for Goodfellas, yes — but the book itself is the uncut version.
Pileggi spent years interviewing Henry Hill, peeling back the layers of mob life.
It’s gritty, personal, and exposes the paranoia, betrayal, and inner decay of the mafia world.
🧨 THE FINAL WORD:
Some books entertain.
These books warn.
And The Gangster’s Handbook might be the last one ever written by a man who got out alive.
